Google announces Translate API closure.

Google announced last week an upcoming closure of a number of API services,programming interface that allows third party developers to base their own products to many of Google’s services and data.

Special attention was given the planned closure of the Translate API, which allows you to use Google’s translation service including web and mobile applications.

The reason for the closure, which should have taken place on 1 December last year,extensive abuse.

Many have criticized the closure, which will probably take the life of many products.Many will be reluctant to use similar services from Google in the future, since you have no guarantee that service will continue to be offered in a year. It can get developers toselect the corresponding services from other suppliers instead.

Google has apparently listened to the traffic and arrived before the weekend meeting ofdevelopers - at least in part. In an update to the original announcement stated thecompany is now in place to close down for good service, will launch a paid version of it.But Google currently offer no details.

The question now make some comments in the blog post, if this was the plan from the beginning - that is to announce the closure, waiting for the developer communityproposes a paid version, and then provide just that. When Google can beat their chestsand say that it provides developer community what they asked for.

Other reports that Google is too afraid to charge for services offered by the company.

What is it?

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.

The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.

IE9 has finally launched a beta version for download!

SAN FRANCISCO – Sept. 15, 2010 – Microsoft today released a beta version of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) and introduced consumers to its vision of site-centric browsing and the promise of a more beautiful Web.

At a launch event in San Francisco, Microsoft announced that the IE9 beta is now available in 33 languages worldwide for download. With a simple user interface that masks new technical muscle and all-around fast performance, the new browser is designed to take a backseat and bring forward the full beauty of the websites and applications people care about, says Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Internet Explorer.

“The Web is about sites, and your browser should be, too,” Hachamovitch says. “IE9 puts you and your site at the center of the browser experience.”

Starting today, tech-savvy consumers can download the beta of IE9 and test drive the new browsing experience at some of the Web’s most popular sites. At the “Beauty of the Web” event in San Francisco, more than 70 top sites and global brands showcased new sites and Web-based applications they have built to take advantage of the new capabilities IE9 offers. Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that the first malicious program classified as a Trojan-SMS has been detected for smartphones running on Google’s Android operating system. Named Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, it has already infected a number of mobile devices.

The new malicious program penetrates smartphones running Android in the guise of a harmless media player application. Users are prompted to install a file of just over 13 KB with the standard Android extension .APK. Once installed on the phone, the Trojan uses the system to begin sending SMSs to premium rate numbers without the owner’s knowledge or consent, resulting in money passing from a user’s account to that of the cybercriminals.

The Trojan-SMS category is currently the most widespread class of malware for mobile phones, but Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a is the first to specifically target the Android platform. It should be noted that there have already been isolated cases of devices running Android being infected with spyware. The first such program appeared in 2009.

“The IT market research and analysis organization IDC has noted that those selling devices running Android are experiencing the highest growth in sales among smartphone manufacturers. As a result, we can expect to see a corresponding rise in the amount of malware targeting that platform,” says Denis Maslennikov, Mobile Research Group Manager at Kaspersky Lab. “Kaspersky Lab is actively developing technologies and solutions to protect this operating system and plans to release Kaspersky Mobile Security for Android in early 2011.”

Kaspersky Lab recommends that users pay close attention to the services that an application requests access to when it is being installed. That includes access to premium rate services that charge to send SMSs and make calls. When a user agrees to these functions during the installation of an application, the smartphone may then be able to make calls and send SMSs without further authorization.

The signature for Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a has already been added to Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus databases.

2010 FIFA World Cup official ball, Jabulani

The Adidas Jabulani is the official match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The ball was unveiled in Cape Town, South Africa on December 4, 2009. Jabulani means “rejoice” in Zulu, and was developed at Loughborough University, UK.

The ball was also used as the match ball of 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and a special version of the ball, the Jabulani Angola, was the match ball of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. This ball was also used in the 2010 Clausura Tournament of Argentina as well as the 2010 MLS season in the USA in the league’s colours of blue and green.

Playable JavaScript Pac Man game on Google’s logo!

Google’s known for changing its homepage logo to celebrate special occasions, but today marks a new first: a playable game in the logo’s place – specifically, a game of Pacman to mark the its 30th anniversary.

The game is just as addictive as the original, and as Google’s Marcin Wichary says, “[we] made sure to include PAC-MAN’s original game logic, graphics and sounds, bring back ghosts’ individual personalities, and even recreate original bugs from this 1980’s masterpiece.”

The company even changed its “I’m Feeling Lucky” button to “Insert Coin” in honor of the occasion. And with that, the world’s collective productivity takes a sharp plunge on this Friday.
